“I Believe In Science”
By Linda P. Prince
It was 7:23 AM, senior hour at Whole Foods. I had passed through the birth-year check point, nabbed a cart and was reaching for a Purell wipe when I heard them. Two young men, who obviously worked at the store, were masked up and deep in conversation. I didn’t hear the question, only the definitively stated answer. “I believe in science.”
My first thought was,“Which one?” Regrettably, I didn’t engage them. Instead my part of the dialogue worked out in my head. Science has given us so many theories, solutions, projections in recent weeks, I wondered which one he was believing in. Or perhaps he was standing firm in his belief they would eventually figure it out.
I once heard it said, If you are married to science you will be widowed many times over in your life. This has certainly been true in recent weeks. While it would be hard to count, seems as many scientific projections and theories have died as people from the virus. Yet, this young man, stood proudly and proclaimed his belief in science.
He is likely part of the millions who have been led to view science as their highest god and have eschewed any notion of something above or outside science. It is a view often voiced with an air of superiority and perceived self-enlightenment.
It has been rather fascinating to watch this battle play out in the media in recent weeks. Those with science as their highest doctrine have had their chance to shine, to assume the throne so to speak. The only phrase missing is “settled science,” which by the way is an oxymoron.
As the sun set on my internal conversation about science, it just hit me. Wait. Covid 19 was launched by —— science. It came out of a level 4 bio lab in Wuhan! Gee thanks, science.
